Today I sold the girls on a trip to Boone Hall Plantation. They were stoked! I feed them all the brochure highlights... you know the stuff that would make them want to go to an old colonial house.
Girls, they have horses and butterflies! A beautiful lake and carriage rides!
I failed to mention a history lesson, a walk through of an old house, with old people and old furniture and OLD stories. I also neglected to tell them I was on a photographic journey and every two seconds I was going to stop, have them hold my lemonade, and click away!
Through this resourceful parental dishonesty, I had two girls chomping at the bit!
This is the same plantation where they filmed the Notebook.. (love that movie) and the plantation that was (according to the brochure) the most amazing!
This was also the plantation where apparently, on this day, they were having a Scottish Heritage and games day!
HOLY MOLY!
The beautiful oak lined street, called the Avenue of the Oaks, that i was dying to get a photograph of was lined with pop-up tents, coolers, koozies and men in 'skirts' with bagpipes!
The place was PACKED!
There were no horses, since there was a special event! The butterfly pavilion wasn't completely open!
No carriage rides, no way to get to the lake!
And the girls were BORED!
I knew I had to do my best, I had dragged them here under false pretenses and just had to deal with the situation.
We followed around the men in 'skirts', danced to bagpipe music..(honestly there is really no beat to this so shakin our booties was a chore) and kinda just ran around and played until the complaining started.
I did what any great mother would do... I lured them in for more photo opportunities with the promise of a Sonic Slushie!
All in all the day didn't go as planned, my ears are still ringing with the sounds of bagpipes and drums and I do believe I may have nightmares for the overexposure of man flesh legs.
BUT...
despite all that, we had a good time and though the colonial history trip I was hoping for didn't come along, we created a day that I hope they will remember in their history!
Now where is that bottle of Tylenol?
Among the moss of the Civil War... were the bagpipes?

I'm waiting for my daily fix!! Where oh where is Day 14?!?
